Yesterday we drove through Canton, Mississippi on our cross-country trip to New Orleans. Canton is the county seat to Madison County and home to about 13,000 people. The Courthouse Square, where these photos were taken, is a historic site and on the National Register of Historic Places. And this Square displays everywhere the severe poverty of the community. While the old buildings remain standing, many are empty or home to marginal businesses. As the door for Attorney Greaves shows, he has long been out of the office. And the florist shop’s brightest flower is the reflection of the Courthouse in its window.
